Q: I have no sound when playing a QuickTime file A: The QuickTime DirectShow parser filter (QuickTime.ax) is very old and isn't able to handle all types of QuickTime files correctly. As a result some QuickTime files play without sound in all players that are dependant on this filter, like for example Windows Media Player.
Recent versions of QuickTime Alternative contain a different set of DirectShow filters (NDParser.ax and NeQTDec.ax) which are better able to handle the different QuickTime audio and video formats.
Media Player Classic should be able to play all QuickTime files correctly and with sound.
For relatively new QuickTime files (like for example all the movie trailers on the Apple website) there is an alternative DirectShow filter that can read the files correctly, including the sound. This alternative filter is part of the K-Lite Codec Pack. The required filters are: a MP4 splitter (Gabest or Haali), a H.264 decoder (CoreAVC or ffdshow), and an AAC decoder. To use the alternative filters for playing the file, you need to rename your file from .mov to .hdmov. These alternative filters will also give far better playback performance compared to the regular QuickTime renderer.
