Inter-universal Teichm¨uller theory via the Gaussian integral The goal of the present paper is to pave the road, for the reader, from a state of complete ignorance of inter-universal Teichm¨uller theory to a state of general appreciation of the “game plan” of inter-universal Teichm¨uller theory by reconsidering the well-known computation of the Gaussian integral ∫ ∞ -∞ e-x2 dx = √π via polar coordinates from the point of view of a hypothetical high-school student who has studied one-variable calculus and polar coordinates, but has not yet had any exposure to multi-variable calculus.
