greater Tokyo is the largest metropolis on earth. Home to 35 million people, it adds more than $1 trillion dollars to Japan's gross domestic product, giving it an economy as big as the whole of India. Yet compared to the cosmopolitan landscapes of New York, London, Hong Kong or Singapore, Tokyo feels downright parochial. There is no kaleidoscope of cultural diversity and many Japanese would like to keep it that way.
