対処方法としては
１、PHP.iniの中のallow_call_time_pass_referenceの値をOn
２、.htaccessにphp_flag allow_call_time_pass_reference Onを追記

デフォルトがOffの為、Onにするのは推奨されていないらしい。
PHPのバージョン間で一部の文法が変更になり、この書き方だと将来のPHPのバージョンでは対応できないかも
っていう内容っぽい。
