どうにも引返せないないから gcc を
# gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 4.1.1 (Gentoo 4.1.1)
に変えました。glibc も update しました。
libc は -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1201308 2006-09-05 14:37 libc-2.4.so
# gcc-config -l は
[11] i686-pc-linux-gnu-4.1.1 *
です。

しかし、gcc が動かない。例えば
# USE="-X" emerge -u emacs

checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc -Os -pipe ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.

/usr/lib/libc.so の file type が分からないと言われたこともある。
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 238 2006-09-05 14:37 /usr/lib/libc.so
