In discussion, it was noted that the main contribution to the variance
of the estimate is from the variance in the abundance trend, and this
limits the precision of the results. The high standard error implies
that the confidence interval extends from negative values to greater
than 0.10. A much smaller standard error would be obtained if it could
be assumed that the abundance had zero trend, but the Workshop agreed
that this assumption should not be made, especially given that one of
the original motivations for estimating the natural mortality rate
was to better determine the trend in stock size.
