メモリ増設の上ノートンの2009年版使用が最善と思いますが。 
 
もしメモリ増設が出来ない場合は初心者にフリーソフトは厳しいので 
脅威の大半はブラウザとメーラ経由という事を考え、ISPのメール/ホームページ 
ウイルスチェックサービス（BIGLOBE、NTT ぷらら等）を利用（プロキシ設定だけ 
なのでPC負荷はない）の上ZoneAlarm ForceFieldを使用すればほとんどPC負荷なく 
防御可能。 
ブラウザとメーラ経由以外の脅威にはザルだけどESET Smart Securityを使用し 
USBメモリやフロッピーディスクのような物騒なものさえ使わなければ概ね大丈夫 
と思います。

ESETはシグネチャが弱いというけどMｃAfeeやPandaもシグネチャは弱いんだよな、でもMcAfeeもPandaも検出率は高い
