このメッセージがでるなら、compiz-check スクリプト的には
fglrx ドライバは入っているけど、fglrxinfo | grep -q mesa じゃないってことらしい。

これは、/etc/X11/xorg.conf に以下を付け足せばいいと思うよ。

　Section "Extensions"
　　Option "Composite" "enable"
　EndSection

そんで、X 再起動してもやっぱりダメなら、etch-backports にある fglrx 関連のパッケージ使えば、
Debian etch + ATI + AIGLX な環境で Compiz Fusion が使えるようになるのですか？
