xineだと再生できます。mplayerではダウンロードしても、urlを引数にとってもNGなんです。 
他のサイトのwmvファイルでもダウンロード、url引数ともに同じ現象がでるもので・・・。 
マシンはNEC PC-LR5009Dでサウンドはlspciで 
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03) 
となってます。

codecは、mplayerのサイトのall-20061022をいれてあります。 
wma9dmod.dll,wmv9dmod.dllも試したんですが。 
 
Plamo4.21インストール直後の環境でMplayerをいれて試しても同様なので、 
使っていて環境が変になった、というわけではなさそうだし。 
う～ん、私の環境だけなのか・・・

mplayerがクラッシュしたときのメッセージは下記です。（私には手出しできないです）

MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: init_audio_codec 
- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM. 
  Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a 'gdb' backtrace and 
  disassembly. Details in DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports_what.html#bugreports_crash. 
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen. 
  It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your 
  gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read 
  DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't and 
  won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible bug.
