We do realize, when we consider commication in a sense broarder than langage, that difficulty in getting meaing across is not limited to those who must speak across a language barrier.
As communication involves ideas, images, and symbolic meaning, communication problems arise in any situation in which the life experiences of the communicators are not the same.
These differences can range from simple matters of age and sex to the standard of living.
Thus, one has to go beyond the words themselves andgaccepted translatinhto become aware of a complex series of psychologcal processes which,
in final analysis, determine the course of human communication.
Whether the words we use faithfully perform their intended communication fanction depends mainly on the subjective reaction they elicit in the mental processes of the listener.
If the receiver attaches the same meaning to the words in decoding the signals as the speaker had in mind when he used them, then the communication is a success.
But usually it does not work out this perfectly.
The communication is often only a partial success
as the result of some degree of difference between the psychological meanings attached to the words by the communicator and the receiver, respectively.
The factors which have an effect on psychological meaning can be varied and profound.
