The abacus migrated from China to Korea around the year 1400 and later Japan, around the year 1600.[15] Korea's version of the abacus is called jupan (??) or supan (??) or jusan (??). [16] The Chinese suanpan was called soroban (算盤, そろばん, lit. "Counting tray") in Japan, imported via Korea around 1600.[17] Like the suanpan, the soroban is still used in Japan today because of its practicality, even with the proliferation of pocket electronic calculators.
