Korean inflation accelerated faster than expected last month due to higher oil
prices and food costs, rising 5.9 per cent from a year ago after gaining 5.5
per cent in June.
Other Asian countries also reported higher July inflation figures yesterday.
Thai consumer prices rose 9.2 per cent, up from 8.9 per cent and a new decade-high.
Indonesia's CPI rose 11.9 per cent, above expectations, from 11.03 per cent.
Kazakh-stan's inflation rate rose 0.9 points from May.
The Bank of Korea has left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 5 per cent
for the past 11 months for fear that a rate increase would dent economic growth.
But despite slowing growth, the central bank is expected to raise interest rates
next week as inflation causes a bigger problem for Asia's fourth-largest economy.
"It won't be easy for the BoK to make a decision because the economy faces a
serious problem of rising inflation and slowing growth," said Mr Oh at Citibank.
The BoK aims to keep inflation between 2.5 per cent and 3.5 per cent until next
year, but consumer prices rose sharply this year, pushing South Koreans' living
costs much higher and damping consumption. Lee Seong-tae, the bank's governor,
said last month that inflation would be high for a "significant period", while
economic growth would slow. The economy grew 4.8 per cent in the second quarter
from a year earlier, down from the first quarter's 5.8 per cent rise.
Still, strong exports would make it easier for the BoK to raise rates to curb
inflation. * South Korea is to step up efforts to develop energy resources near
a cluster of rocks at the centre of a diplomatic dispute between Seoul and Tokyo,
Seoul's energy ministry said yesterday. The move could heighten tensions over
the islands, called Dokdo in Korean and Takeshima in Japanese, which lie about
halfway between the two countries' mainlands.
"If we develop gas hydrates near Dokdo, we will keep our territorial sovereignty,
and will benefit by securing energy reserves that we lack," local media quoted
Lee Youn-ho, the Korean energy minister, as saying in parliament.
