Japan's second largest island "Hokkaido" (北海道) also should be an indepedent country. It was an independent "Republic of Ezo" in 1868. People on Hokkaido speaks two different languages; Ainu and Janpanese.
They have different culture. Ezo was not considered a part of Japan in the same way that the other "main" islands of modern Japan are. More information, type "Republic of Ezo" in Wikipedia or Google search.

Okinawa (Ryukyuan, 琉球) has completely different language (Ryukyuan languages) and culture from that of Japan. Japan governmnet is forcing Okinawan to learn standard Japanese, destorying their culture.
