Battle was joined at dawn on Friday 25 Ramadan 658/3 September 1260.17
At first the left wing of the Mamlūk army was overcome by the Mongols’ right
wing. Quṭuz managed to regroup his forces and mounted a successful second
attack, but the Mongols recovered and once more the Mamlūks were close to
defeat. Quṭuz again regrouped and this time, in a frontal charge, apparently
after several attempts, the Mamlūks defeated the Mongols. Kitbughā’s death
in the battle was a contributory factor in the collapse of the Mongol camp.
Mamlūk sources note that Kitbughā’s body was found on the battlefield after
the battle and his head was sent to Cairo and hung next to one of the city
gates. After the battle the Mongols scattered in all directions, and most o
f them were killed in their hiding places either by local villagers or by Baybars,
whom Quṭuz dispatched in pursuit.
