in a given endeavor で、「ある与えられた・所与の試みにおいて」。
この文章の場合は「所与の取り組みにおいて」ぐらいにしておきましょうか。
「与えられた試み」というのは、狭い意味では会社の上司から命令された仕事の
場合など、広い意味では「運命によって与えられた任務」等の意味にもなります。
こういう given の使い方は結局なくても意味にさして違いはないと思います。
「in an endeavor」で十分。
たぶん、こういう given は、ちょっと気取ったり、やや硬い言い方をしたい時に
使うのだと思われます。
