A MUM who was left with horrific facial injuries after she was mauled by her neighbour’s dog has blasted the jailed owner’s claims she was to blame for the attack.
Patrick Maher, 47, was locked up for a year along with his partner Leeane McHugh, 37, after her American Akita lashed out at Sylvia Baillie.
She was left scarred for life after three-year-old Kioshi bit her face when she was at the couple’s home in Paisley, near Glasgow, in July 2016.
Maher has been released from prison and now claims Sylvia, 62, was bitten because she went to give the dog a “kiss”.
He said it wasn’t his or McHugh’s fault and Sylvia has branded his accusation “absolute rubbish”.
Speaking to the Daily Record, he said: “They said we stood back and did nothing but it all happened in a matter of seconds. It wasn’t our fault.
“She was leaving and the dog was behind the couch sleeping. She patted me on the back and the dog stood up and then put its front paws on the back of the couch.”
He said Sylvia “fell” towards the dog after she went to kiss it at their home following a funeral.
It then pounced on her after she went the leave the house and eventually let go when Sylvia’s daughter pulled it off her mum.
The surgeon who operated on her said her injuries were the worst he had ever seen following a dog attack.
She has revealed she still suffers panic attacks and terrifying flashbacks as well as a fear of dogs.
The attack left her unable to eat without using a straw and she couldn’t look at herself in the mirror.
She said he is “talking a load of rubbish” and stressed that she is victim.
Sylvia told the paper: “I don’t think anyone would attempt to kiss an Akita.
“I bent over the couch to shake Maher’s hand to thank him for taking me to the crematorium and the next thing I saw was the dog jump over the couch right on to my face. I never antagonised it.”
McHugh admitted being the owner of a dog that was dangerously out of control when it attacked Sylvia.
And her partner Maher pleaded guilty to being in charge of a dog that was dangerously out of control when it attacked his elderly aunt, Jane Darroch, and left her with "severe injury and permanent disfigurement" to her arm.
The pair were both jailed for 12 months and were banned from keeping dogs for 20 years.
Maher was given an extra four-month sentence after he terrorised Sylvia when she tried to recover at home – and he even flashed her from his window.
Sylvia’s brother added that Maher tried to sell the dog on Gumtree for ￡50 24 hours after the attack.
Sheriff David Pender ordered the Akita to be destroyed.
